Yellow Metals

Copper forms the basis of number of very useful alloys but remains an extremely useful metal in its own right. Copper has an electrical conductivity that is superior to all metals other than silver, has a very high thermal conductivity and is easily worked. It is used for many building applications e.g. roofing and cladding with its aesthetically pleasing green protective oxide film.

Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin but is also used to describe a wider range of copper based alloys. Generally, bronze alloys consist of about 12% tin, though some specialised products may contains much as 20%. Phosphor bronzes, which contain less than 8% tin, have an addition of phosphor to improve strength and hardness. Superior attributes can often be attained through the addition of other elements such as lead and tin to the basic bronze alloy.

Brass is produced in a wide variety of forms with many different characteristics and attributes. It is a basic alloy of copper and zinc and it finds many engineering applications as well as decorative ones. Additions of lead generally improve machinability and other alloying elements are used to improve strength and corrosion resistance.

Beryllium copper alloys have a beryllium content of up to 2.7% depending on the intended application. Other alloying elements such as nickel and cobalt are also added to improve specific properties such as heat treatment performance. When heat treated these alloys exhibit high strength and hardness and these properties combine with thermal and electrical conductivity, as well as good corrosion resistance, to make beryllium copper a very useful material.

Copper-nickel alloys (often referred to as cupro-nickels) offer moderate to high strength and excellent resistance to various waters, including seawater, forming a protective surface film in such conditions. In addition they provide good weldability and anti-fouling properties.
